Houston man threatening to jump off Valero roof is apprehended

HOUSTON, Texas – Man threatening to jump off a Valero awning was apprehended by the Houston Police Department on Thursday morning.

HPD received a call at 7:30 a.m. of a man who climbed the awning of a Valero gas station located in the intersection of Beechnut and Cook road.

The man, whose name has not been released by authorities, had stripped himself down to his underwear by the time authorities had arrived.

“The man was yelling at the officers and was making very little sense, Said HPD Commander Larry Baimbridge, “ officers tried to talk him down for well over an hour.”

Family and friends of the man were at the scene trying to talk him down from the awning.

SWAT, HFD and negotiators were later dispatched to the scene.

The man gave himself up peacefully and was taken to Ben Taub hospital for minor injuries.

“It appears that the man was on some sort of narcotics”, said Baimbridge, “if I had to guess I would say its either crack or cocaine”.

“His main concern was that we wouldn’t harm him, and we assured him that we wouldn’t”, said Baimbridge.

Negotiators who spoke to the man mentioned that he spoke about being distressed with some family matters.

Baimbridge said that authorities are not looking to press charges at this time.
